A Few Words About Hail Regarding Your Roof

Many times, hail damage is not visible from the ground. It takes someone actually getting on your roof and doing an inspection to determine if there is damage.

When a roof has been exposed to a hailstorm severe enough to cause granules to be dislodged from the surface of the shingles, the roof has been compromised. In many cases, the damage is so extensive that it is imperative to replace the entire roofing system.

One common myth that homeowners believe is that "if it's not leaking, it's ok". This is actually not true. The effects of a damaged roof may not be apparent for about a year. Prolonged exposure to the sun, wind and rain causes asphalt to deteriorate. This is the reason that a hail damaged roof will tend to fail prematurely.

Heavy hail damage is obvious because of the indentations in the shingle. When the surface damage of the shingle is not visible, look for indentations (or "dings") on vents, ridge vents, siding or any other soft metal objects (or roof hardware) that may show impact.

Circular areas of granules will fall off the shingles. Granules are what protect the asphalt and matting from harmful UV rays from the sun, the same as sunscreen protects our skin. Some will be apparent immediately following a storm, some may take 6-12 months to show. What has occurred is that the impact of the hailstone has broken or weakened the bond between the granules and the asphalt.

With granules missing, the sunlight, wind and weather qucikly attack the asphalt and the maximum performance of the shingle will be compromised.

If your home has been hit by hailstones, it is very important to have an Ace Renovations experienced professional come out and do a free evaluation for you.

Remember, even if you can't see it from the ground or if you don't currently have leaks, that does not mean that you do not have damage.
